Bournmoor Village
Local Information:
Bournmoor is a village in County Durham, England & is situated a short distance from Chester le Street. St Barnabas Church which houses the Frostley Angel can be found in the village.
The village was originally part of the Lambton Castle Estate but developed from 1783 onwards with the sinking of the first of seven local coal mines that were Lambton Colliery.
For much of the 20th Century, the village was called Burnmoor, taking its name from the Moorsburn (an alternative name for Hutton Burn which runs through the village). Examples of both names can still be seen in the village – for example the primary school is Bournmoor Primary School but the Scout Group & Cricket Club both use the name Burnmoor.
The Ordnance Survey Map from the end of the 19th century shows the settlement as Bournmoor, but maps produced after the development of the ‘Flowers’ estate, dated between 1920 & 1960 call the Burnmoor. Later maps then reverted to the name of Bournmoor & village signs use Bournmoor now.
